The Welty Crain Foundation

Starting a foundation non-profit

The current mission of the WC Foundation is to preserve the history of families through research and publication about their lives and to safeguard the important archives.

We gather and share the unparalleled library of photographs, documents and family stories that have been told for generations, but are slipping away as the voices and archives of the family are lost.

Through our Life and Times of XX series we publish and distribute these stories to genealogy societies, and local and state archives. We do this in both both print and digital versions making referencing and sharing research quick and easy.

We strive to research and preserve the tangible artifacts of a family Legacy by uncovering family homes, lands, memorials and cemeteries and if necessary, work to maintain them through long term financial endowments to properly conserve and protect them.

Provide guidance to family members interested in pursuing membership in a number hereditary organizations including: Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the Revolution, Flagon and Trencher, General Society of the War of 1812, Grand Army of the Republic, National Society Daughters of the American Colonists, Society of California Pioneers, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, National Society Descendants of American Farmers and others.

DECEMBER 2022 UPDATE

The creation of the Foundation is seriously underway!!!

  • We have are now incorporated in the State of California
  • We have completed and filed our IRS form 1023

We are now waiting for the IRS to complete their side!

What about tax deductible donations for 2022 you might be asking?

Here are some "helpful" hints directly from our Non-profit attorney. I added a few notes for clarity.

  • A donation of less than $250.00 can be made without a receipt, so we can accept that right away and you can write it off of your taxes in 2022 without issue. You will of course receive a letter of thanks from us as a Founding donor.
  • A larger donation can be made (and of course we'd love that), however, it can not be deducted until the Foundation receives its official 501(c)3 letter. This is expected no later than April 2023.
  • A solution for a donation above $250.00 is to write us a check and we'd have it in 2022 and we can either hold it, or deposit it (your choice).  Once we receive the IRS letter, we'll send you a formal support letter with our non-profit numbers and then you can file your 2022 taxes content in the knowledge that it would be completely tax deductible. If you want to be fast in filing your taxes this option wouldn't work.

  • Another option is to wait until we receive our official notice and then send us a check of any amount with a 2023 date and deduct it very safely from your 2023 taxes.
  • On the very off chance that you'd like to give us a very, very large amount... over $25,000 you could send us a letter, on letter head, stating that "your donation will only be made if we receive our 501(c)3 right away, or else your donation will be retracted." The attorney says that type of letter would get our Foundation processing moved to the front of the IRS line completing in as little as 3 weeks.
  • A final option is a combination: a $250.00 check now and a larger donation to hold until after we receive our letter.

For the schedule. We have received a 100% vote of confidence from our attorney that we will receive 501(c)3 status and right now are on the timetable of the IRS, which is currently a 3–4-month period. The date of acceptance as a 501(c)3 is retroactive to our incorporation date. No matter the date of the IRS latter, making a donation in 2022 will be deductible in 2022.

If you'd like to ask more questions or for more specific things give me a call at 415-205-1136.

Again, the Foundation truly appreciates your desire to support us and we'll work with you in any way possible to make that happen.
